Classification
of Naksatras
: ..............
To minimize the possible confusion, one should as far
as possible stick to a single ancient author and one classification.
We are accepting Varahamihira's stellar classification as proposed
in the chapter Naksatrakarmagunadhaya in his monumental work Vrihadsamhita.
Copies of this work found in different parts of India and its translations
discovered in other countries strictly tally with each other, so we
can accept that there is no interpolation.
During the Vedic time Naksatra series used to start from Kritika, thereafter the other 26/27 Naksatras strictly adhered to their serial positions (series began with Kritika in Taitteriya, Kath and Maitrei Samhita and Atharva Veda). Bharani headed the list in Vedanga Jyotisha, but in post Vedic works such as Surya Sidhdhanta and Vrihadsamhita the Naksatra list is headed by Aswini. This can be explained with the shifting of date of vernal equinox.
Varahmihira's stellar list is same as in Surya Siddanta but he excluded out Abhijit. In the list below the serial positions of the Naksatras are denoted by consecutive numerals. Subsequently in this work the numerals will represent the adjoining Naksatra. The serial positions shown here are as found in the Naksatra Jatakadhaya chapter of Vrihadsamhita.

Based upon the nature of the ventures these Naksatras are supposed to patronize, Varahamihira divided the Naksatras into seven classes. About the nature of five classes only Varahamihira was confident, but was not definite about the remaining two classes. One of the classes he termed as 'Chara' which means transitional or variable; the second as Mridu -tixna (tender -dreadful), as the name implies the Naksatras of this class presided over function of contradictory nature.
The stellar classification
of Varahamihiras as per Naksatra Karmagunadhaya is given below. The
energy requirement column is our addition. Table>>

Parasara's
stellar classification on function of the Naksatras does not differ
much from the Varahamihira's classification except Parasara called
one Naksatra class Xipra (swift) while Varahamihira named them as
Laghu (light). Varahamihira in chapter-85 of his Brihadsamhita dealt
with the 'lordship of the Naksatras' on various materials, but what
is more important to us is the chapter-101 of the same work which
describes 'effects of birth in the asterism' (Naksatra jatakadhaya).
It will be prudent to search for further proof, that the Naksatras
are 'steadfast in their attributed characters' and the 'effects' predicted
in different classifications have got common nature.
| Class of Naksatra | Nature of the native born when the Moon is in the vicinity of that Naksatra | |
| Dhruba 4, 12, 21, 26 | Popular, attractive, happy, fortunate. | |
| Tixna 6, 9, 18, 19 | Haughty, insincere, unpopular treacherous. (19 Mula- rich happy, trustworthy, but will cause destruction). | |
| Ugra 2,10,11,20,25 | Determined, masterly, rich, industrious (vide. Parasara 2 Bharani-cruel, robber, unstable). | |
| Chara 7, 15, 22, 23, 24 | Self-controlled, charitable, generous, successful ( 7 Punarvasu- thirsty (?), 24 Satavisag-cruel). | |
| Laghu 1, 8, 13 | Amiable, efficient, industrious. | |
| Mridu -Tixna 3, 16 | glutton, greedy, quarrelsome, profligate. | |
| Mridu 5, 14, 17, 27 | Nonhardy (soft), hedonist, fickleminded but well to do. 5 Mrigasira born are industrious. | |
The classification given above show that format of stellar classification is the same in both the cases, and a child born under a particular star will have inherent characters which will roughly need the same energy pattern as the stellar functions. i.e. Mridu class of Naksatras (purported to represent low energy reime) patronize song, dance and merriment, and a person born under any one of the member of this class of Naksatras are supposed to be nonhardy, hedonist, and fickleminded.
