imageAstrology based on the point of Ascendant .......

Our thesis is that the formulators of astrological canons of different schools of astrology were knowingly or unknowingly following rhymes of geomagnetic variations. The Vedic astrologers/ astronomers took the 27-day solar energy cycle as the basis of their elective astrology. In the present day predictive Indian astrology, lunar -stellar conjunctions play a subordinate role to zodiacal house-ascendant based calculation introduced to India in 9th-8th century B. C. and became dominant by 6th century B.C.

The basic structure of the zodiacal -ascendant astrology is that the distant celestial space beyond the influence of the revolution of the Earth is divided into twelve equal 'houses', and each house is identified by the stellar design (constellations) observed 'within that house'. The twelve houses will cover all the 360° of space around the Earth within which the orbital planes of all solar planets fall. The immediate circumterrestrial space around the Earth including the part influenced by axial revolution of the Earth (the part which revolves along with the Earth) is also divided into twelve equal houses. These houses known as 'houses of significations' (Bhaba), Each occupy 30° of angular space. Among them the house of Ascendant play a pivotal role in predictive astrology.

Jeff Mayo, an eminent western astrologer wrote, "the Ascendant is determined by the degree of the Ecliptic which is rising on the eastern horizon at birth, that is at a given moment of time, viewed at a horizontal angle from the place of birth" (Astrology-Jeff Mayo. 1964. P.70). S.P. Learner, another western astrologer defined Ascendant as the "Sign in which the Sun was rising at the time of your birth" (Astrological Assistance).

In Indian astrology, 'the angular space of 30°' above the imagined straight line which runs parallel to the Earth's surface and touches the top of the rising Sun (Purbaxitiza) will constitute the house of ascendant or the first house, also known as the house of 'self', and the imaginary line will point towards the exact point of Ascendant.

As the Earth revolves from the west to east, the position of the house of Ascendant along with the eleven other houses will revolve along with the Earth and at the exact time of birth whatever zodiacal sign in the outer space the line of Ascendant was pointing towards will be taken as the first house of signification, and from that house anticlockwise the 2nd, 3rd, …. 12 houses will be delimited. In the western astrology, where the 'cusps' are given much importance, a house of signification may partially overlap two adjoining zodiacal houses, whereas in the mainstream Indian astrology the boundaries of zodiacal houses and the houses of significations are always made to co-incide.

The zenith (the highest point in the celestial sphere above the head of the observer) over the place of birth which is also known as the Midheaven or Medium Coeli, 'Gagan' in the Indian astrology will always form the central pont of the 10th house, and suppose to signify activities, career, success etc. The house located 90° from it (anti clockwise) will be the first house, singifying 'self', personality, up and down in the life etc., and the house located at 90° clockwise from the 10th house will form the 7th house, signifying spouse, partnership, trade etc. The house located at antipodal point from the 10th house indicates the Nadir, Imum Coeli or 'Patal' in the Indian astrology, which constitutes the 4th house. This house is supposed to signify material comfort and possessions.

As the Earth revolves on its own axis, the angular position of the place of birth in relation to the celestial bodies and the zodiacal houses will be constantly changing, whereas the angular relationship between the place of birth and the houses of significations will remain constant. Before the astrologers there is one more option, which is equally valid.

Whatever may be the angular position of the place of the birth during the time of birth in repect to celestial bodies and zodiacal houses, the 'Mid heaven' sky will signify the '10th house' and the rest of the houses of signification will get arranged according to their prearranged positions.

The houses of significations revolve along with the birth place at the same speed, hence no angular deviation ever takes place between the two.

These arguments may appear to be scholasticism, but the practical implication is that,if someone accepts the second option, at the same time believes that there must be some physical causality behind the 'fixing of fate' of an individual, the final arbitration and determination of fate must take place in the circumterrestrial, 'inner space' around the Earth which revolves along with the Earth.

In the zodiacal-predictive astrology, the role of Ascendant is supreme. The house of Ascendant or first house is also known as the house of 'self', represent personality, body, passage of life etc.,anticlockwise, the second house indicates relations, speech, wealth etc. ; the 3rd house-siblings, intelligence, power etc; the 4th, -mother, domestic bliss, material comforts etc, so on and so forth. Each house depending upon its sequential position in relation to the house of Ascendant is supposed to have aquired beneficial or harmful properties. The planets 'owing' the 'malefic' 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th and 12th houses are considered to be 'ominous' to the native. Whereas the planets owning the 4th, 7th, 10th and 1st houses will reverse their role in actual function etc. etc.

We have gone into this much detail to emphasize that in zodiacal predictive astrology, Ascendant is the only 'fixed'point. The houses, their significations, and the worth of planets, 'sitting' in them will be evaluated on the basis of their angular position in respect to point and house of Ascendant. While drawing the natal-chart, positions of the planets and houses of zodiac will be more or less 'fixed' during 24 hours, but the position of the point of Ascendant will be constantly changing with the time and place of birth.

In real term, the point of Ascendant is an astrological expression of the 'angle' at which the Sun was located on the 'Ecliptic' during the exact time of birth of the person in relation to the place of birth.Depending upon the annual revolution of the Earth, the Sun wil be visible 'in' a definit zodiacal house, but the position of Ascendant wil change depending upon the time and place of birth.

Informations required to determine the correct point of Ascendant in the birth-chart are:

1. The year of birth : In Indian astrology the boundary between the houses of Aries and Pisces, is taken as the zero degree, but due to shifting of the date of Vernal equinox and non rectification of the same in the orthodox almanac, it is neglected by most of the astrologers while calculating point of ascendant.

2. The month of birth : Time of sunrise and sunset, the apparent speed of the Sun against the Naksatra background will be changing due to annual revolution of the Earth and alteration of solstices (position of the ecliptic due to declination, angular distance north or south from the celestial equator measured along a great imaginary circle passing through the celestial poles).

3. The position of the Sun on the ecleptic, measured in east-west directional angle in relation to the place of birth, at exact time (local) of the birth. In scientific language, Ascendant is determined on the basis of exact position of the place of birth during the time of birth in the background of annual cycle of geo-electromagnetic variatios, and the 24 hours long (day and night) frequency alteration brought in by the revolution of the Earth on its axis. The 'one day cycle' of frequency variation being much more prominent than the annual cycle of changes, the Ascendant based predictive astrology essentially rely upon the 24-hours cycle of energy variations. Unfortunately, in the classical texts of Indian astrology 'quality of time' described on hour to hour basis, and astrological effects of 24-hours brought in by the apparent transit of the Sun cannot be found. Such classification would have enabled us to synchronize the same with the electromagnetic frequency variations on hour by hour basis for 24-hours. Bihourly (2-hours) effects of the position of the Sun can be found in nearly every classical work of astrology in the form of "Bhava-phaladesh" on the position of the Sun. That is, the position of the Sun in the sky in respect to the place of birth during the exact time of birth of the person, and expected astrological effects of such position on the fate, fortune and the health of the native.

If the birth took place just at the sunrise or within the next two hours, the Sun will be placed in the first house (anthipodal-7th). As the time passes , the noon Sun will 'move' to the zenith, and then it will be placed in the 10th house (antipodal-4th). The setting Sun will be located on 7th house. The midnight Sun will be in the 4th house.

The solar wind comprised of energetic particles and plasma when comes within the Earth's magnetic influence will form a collision free front of magnetosheath which is the outer boundary of magnetosphere. As the Sun approaches the zenith (10th house) for a particular place, the magnetosheath over that place gets deformed and being subjected to maximum energy bombardment the magnetosheath approaches nearest to the surface of the Earth. At the leeward house (4th house) the magnetotail gets elongated and magnetosheath moves further away. The auroral oval formed in the upper atmosphere due to excitation of ions of gases, cosmic dusts, even probably terrestrial dusts by the energetic particles and rays, will be located at the intersection of outer shell of Van-Allen belts with the Earth's atmosphere. This auroral oval will move towards the equator over the sky space represented by the 1st and 7th houses (when the Sun is in the 10th house).

The controlling agent in the zodiacal-Ascendant based astrology can be the micro pulsation excitation or hydromagnetic emission which are strongly influenced by the local time (V. A. Troitskaya-Micropulsations and the state of Magnetosphere -1967. P. 233). Streams of charged particles after penetrating the magnetosheath cause the excitation, and hydromagnetic emission is produced in the outer region of the magnetosphere. "A source of low-energy protons located at a distance L ~ 10, for example may populate the whole radiation belt with protons of an energy of several MeV, the protons gaining energy as they move inwards." (V.A. Troitskaya -P. 236. Opp.cit).

The diurnal variations of micropulsation which are typically broad one, are observed at high latitude of Earth with maxima around midday and in the afternoon, and a much narrower one at middle and low latitude with maxima during the night and early morning (This may indicate that the 'high latitude' European astrology may not be so much suitable in the tropical and subtropical countries and the same should be true in vice versa). The longer period of oscillations occur mainly at midday and in the afternoon with a phase jump one or two hours before the Sun 'reaching the zenith'. (As a general rule, in between 10-11 AM of local time in India, the Sun will be in the 11th house, the most auspicious house for the Sun to be in any natal-chart according to Indian astrology).

The phase change and the hydro-magnetic micropulsation alteration pattern within the 24-hours cycle is independent of the 27-day cycle. That is to say, irrespective of quantum of energy present, the variation pattern within the 24-hours cycle will remain constant. If this information is superimposed on Indian astrology, it will appear that the predictions made on the basis of lagna (Ascendant) should be uniformly applicable to all the Naksatras, but the 'intensity' of the results will vary. Probably because of this the classical texts of Indian astrology have given advice that, the predictions made on the basis of Janma lagna (Ascendant) must be modified against the background of strength of the Chandra lagna (27-day lunar stellar cycle).

Micropulsation is the most sensitive of all geo-magnetic oscillations, where, apart from the latitude, the local time is the most important factor (it should be remembered that the point of ascendant is determined on the basis of position of the Sun in respect to birth place during the time of birth). These micropulsations can be of 'shortest period (Pc 1); a family of continuous pulsations (Pc 2-5) and irregular pulsations (Pi 2). During the period of changes in magnetosphere brought by increase or decrease of solar flux, the micro oscillation pattern rapidly changes from one form to other but its ultimate form will be shaped by the angle between the terrestrial magnetic polarity and the direction of the stream of solar particles (controlled by local time) and the distances from the Earth's magnetic poles (latitude).

A vital and till today unanswered question in this context is whether other celestial members of the solar system including the Moon, and celestial conditions such as eclipses and nodes can influence the nature and intensity of micropulsation? P. Seymour (Astrology : the Evidence of Science 1988) postulates that particular planetary configuration in the solar system may increase (due to unusual distribution of gravity) intensity of the solar wind. Such postulation even if ultimately proven to be true, will only explain the 'effects' of enhanced solar emission universally on the biological world of this Earth, but will fail to explain how such increased energy may effect individual's 'fate'.

Microoscilations will change with the latitude, longitude and local time (solar position). A person born in any particular time on any specific place on the Earth's surface will come to this world in a definite 'energy regime' with its own 'energy pattern' changing every milisecond, pattern which never was and will never be repeated. Though it is not known whether planets of solar system having their own 'energy dynamo' as Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune etc. and energy depleters like Saturn and newmoon have any measurable effects on the pattern of microoscilation, the astrologers of the world through the millennia are insisting that these planetary bodies do have such effects.

The scientific and sociological rules hidden behind some of the 'esoteric astrological tenets' can be deciphered. As for example in Mansagar (18th century) it is stated, that "a person will be active and successful if the Sun is located in the 10th house in his natal-chart, but his old age will be disease-prone and he will be derided by his wives and children".

"The Sun in the 10th house" simply means that the person was born during the time of high noon when the magnetosheath was pressed 'low' and the microoscilation was on the widest band. It might be possible (no study has been made) that a person born in such energy regime have higher rate of body metabolism, higher average body temperature and more active life. Such a person does have greater possibilities of achieving success in this world than a sickly or lethargic man. Till 18th century 'success' in this world could be achieved either through martial activities or other physically exhausting a work. There is a strong possibility that such a person becomes disease prone in his old age due to over exhaustion. A powerful, autocratic person is generally neglected by everybody when he or she becomes old and or feeble.

More subtle tenets of astrology are difficult to understand. As for example, why is it predicted that a person having the Sun in the 10th house should also inherit substantial property from his or her father? Similarly why a person born with Sun in the 1st house (early morning, after sunrise) is supposed to have weak constitution, little hairs on the head, tall, never be happy and should roam around a lot in quest of happiness?

It is known, that if the Sun was in the 1st house at the time of birth, the 'auroral oval' was compressed towards the equator over the longitude of birth place effecting the micro-pulsation pattern. In Indian astrology, the Sun is supposed to be beneficial if located in any one of the 11th, 10th or 9th houses, whereas the Sun is supposed to be highly maleficient if located in either 12th or 8th house. In scientific language, the Sun is considered to be 'beneficial' if located on the zenith or within 45° of the zenith on either side over the place of birth, during the time of birth, and harmful if located between 45° -75° from either side of the perpendicular touching the zenith. The Sun is taken as 'weak' if located between 0°-45° or 150°-180° from the place birth during the time of birth. The cardinal rule of mainstream predictive Indian astrology is that maximum attention should be given to the position of the Ascendant, followed by the position of the Moon calculated to nearest half second. Both of them will indicate the solar energy regime and lunar gravity during the time of birth.

The position of the Sun in the birth-chart does not only indicate the angular relation between the Sun and the place of birth during the time of birth, the zodiacal house occupied by the Sun also shows the location of the Earth in its orbit. The placement of the Sun in a natal-chart will be changing at a speed, roughly transgressing one zodiacal house in one month, and the circle will be complete in one year. The moon will make a full revolution in nearly 29-days. The ever shifting point of ascendant will 'cover' all the zodiacal houses in 24 hours. The positions of rest of the 'slower' planetary bodies will be also in continuous change, hence it is virtually impossible to have two exactly similar birth-chart.

We are now in a position to demonstrate that, while formulating the rules of lunar-stelar elective astrology, and stellar classification the ancient astrologers followed the solar energy variation pattern controlled by the 27-day cycle. There is a strong possibility that the Ascendant-zodiacial house based predictive astrology stands on the bed-rock of 24-hrs long energy variation cycle on the Earth's surface, generated by the revolution of the Earth on its axis.! Unexpected End of Formula

The role played by the Moon and other planetary bodies is not yet properly studied so it will be foolhardy to offer any comment at this stage. One cannot even neglect the Naksatras (combination of Stars)as, "The non-solar particles up to 10 to the power 11eV arriving from the out-side of the planetary system are influenced by the interplanetary magnetic field ………. The modulation of these particles by the interplanetary magnetic field is important for explaining eleven- year-cycle, the Forbush type decrease and also the diurnal anisotropy". (Properties of Interplanetary Space R. Lust-1967). Position of the Moon in the natal-chart is most important in the Dasa (period) system of astrology and Gochara system (planetary transition) of Indian astrology, but the physical role of the Moon is not yet understood in shaping up human destiny.

Excursion to Sikkim
- By Barsha Das, class X

On 28th November 2006 our school planned to taken the class IX students for an excursion to Sikkim. We went to West Sikkim which is really a very chilly place. I believe that this is one of those places which most tourists have failed to notice despite its beauty and charm.

We were 62 students in the team along with a guide. We boarded the Kanchenjungha Express at Guwahati railway station.

A tortured unyielding woman - Dhruva Saikia

pix

The modest novelist makes no hush-hush of the real woman’s true identity on whose life Tuna Gautam’s debut novel Jinnat is based. Probably the first ever Assamese novel that portrays a real woman in her lifetime is remarkable for the young writer’s voracious insight, cool, calm and collected narration of a ruthless husband and his panicky wife’s conjugal clash culminating in an intact commentary on the Islamic divorce deadlock.
